Thermodynamic

This month we’re focusing on heat regulation, both internally and externally. As Summer encroaches, our bodies and minds undergo significant changes and to a certain extent this contributes to stress. Stress can manifest in “healthy” and “unhealthy” ways. Healthy stress can feel like that push or drive to do or achieve more. That deep, almost uncomfortable stretch in yoga, the endorphins released during and following an intense bout of exercise, the overflowing sense of accomplishment that follows the completion of a task at hand, the shedding of tears after an intense emotional experience. Unhealthy stress can feel eerily similar, yet inherently different. It’s that push or drive to do or achieve more accompanied by a sense of urgency. A feeling “we must,” an instinct, a habit. It’s something that almost immediately dysregulates the nervous system and sends cortisol coursing through our bloodstream. This can show up on our skin and throughout our lives in numerous ways. Excess heat in the body can contribute to inflammation (decreasing physical, mental and emotional resiliency). Both healthy and unhealthy stress impact our whole being. While we are often predisposed to believe we can never do enough, there can be too much of a good thing!

To alleviate the building of heat and to pacify the unrest, it feels best to do just a little bit less. Often it is within the rest and the doing of less that more is accomplished and effortlessly integrated. By gently allowing ourselves to soften, and slow, inviting in more relaxing and restorative forms of self-care, we allow ourself space to move as we are meant to. By removing the focus from a singular point of view to a broader perspective (from focusing on a singular task or goal, to holding space for the whole), we may move from guiding ourselves to allowing ourselves to be guided. Less work with more lasting results, how productive is that?! If your body and mind are craving things to do, and areas of life to actively participate in, there are lots of wonderful things to do! Cultivating a daily soothing and cooling breath work practice, gentle, low-impact movement and resting when called, incorporation of adaptogens (Ashwagandha, Astragalus, Tulsi, Licorice root, Reishi mushroom, etc.), and light, nourishing meals, lymphatic drainage massage, and emotional release (laughter, tears, frustration, joy…), feeling our feelings when they’re asking to be felt and allowing them to guide us. In the allowance of, we train ourselves to operate from our heart space rather than the head case. As the nervous system acclimates to this new way of being and our minds learn to trust and witness the tangible effects of our effort to do less, all aspects of us may begin to feel a bit more harmonious. The heat subsides. We cool down.
